Keep in mind

Centro Romero's immersion program is quite flexible. We can customize your experience to accommodate you within almost any area of interest your group may have: immigration, environmental justice, economic justice, among others. At the beginning of your immersion experience, we will provide a cultural and theological orientation meeting to help your group understand the culture of the U.S.-Mexico border region. In addition, we provide theological reflection throughout your experience, especially at the end of your time with us. Our theological reflection times help the group process and integrate what they've experienced in Mexico. The objective of our immersion program is education and social transformation.

As you plan...

  • 1. Dream it.

At Centro Romero, we champion the belief that experience, not lecturing, catalyzes personal transformation. We understand that real-life experiences and interactions have a profound impact, often surpassing the effects of formal education. With this in mind, we steer clear of pre-established goals for visiting groups. Instead, we collaborate with each group, tailoring their experiential goals to their unique needs and interests. Let us know what specific goals you have in mind for your group.

  • 3. Build it.

Once you decide on the length of your stay with us, then it is time to start looking at the specific content you want based on the goals you have set in your plans. Centro Romero programs are versatile in matters related to immersion themes and experiences. From immigration issues to issues related to sex trafficking, economic justice, and environmental justice, we can organize a local or bi-national immersion experience for you. Likewise, as part of your immersion experience, we can provide guest speakers, experts in relevant areas, home-cooked meals, local and bi-national ground transportation, and coordination with local motels or hotels for your stay in San Diego if you are coming from afar. Whatever you need, we will work with you to build the best immersion experience possible together.

  • 2. Plan it.

How much time would you like to spend with us? Centro Romero’s immersion experiences range from one to ten days. Our programs are designed for self-organized groups. Tijuana is the host city for all of our border immersion experiences, where groups meet with community organizations, community leaders, migrants, maquiladora workers, their families, and executives. Besides traveling to Tijuana, Mexico, those groups participating in the five-day immersion program will also be able to explore the local context more deeply. Activities on the U.S. side may include visits to Chicano Park in Barrio Logan (San Diego), Southwestern Missions (Oceanside), and agencies working on issues of sex trafficking, hunger, and the environment, among others. Our visits may include visits to U.S. governmental agencies such as the Border Patrol, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and immigration detention centers.

  • 4. Sell it.

As you start recruiting participants for your immersion experience, you might find that the main concern for many potential participants is around the issue of safety. At Centro Romero, we take every precaution to ensure the safety of our immersion groups, which has led to 15 years of programs without significant problems. Centro Romero has thorough insurance coverage, including for travel in Mexico; our volunteers are knowledgeable in emergency procedures and will never take groups outside the cell phone coverage areas. We have extensive safety protocols in place, and we are glad to share them. We are also available to provide information so you can put together a helpful and effective recruitment tool that you can share with potential participants.

“Attempting to liberate the oppressed without their reflective participation in the act of liberation is to treat them as objects that must be saved from a burning building.”
